Unpacking Ontario’s 2015 Sexual Health Education Curricula
May 25, 2015 from 8:30 am - 12:00 pm$250
This timely workshop, analyzing and understanding Ontario’s new Sexual Health Education Curriculum will be divided into three sections. In the first section participants will review the significant changes between Ontario’s previous Growth and Development/Healthy Growth and Sexuality strands (1998-2000) and the recently released Human Development and Sexual Health strand (2015). The second section will be devoted to analysis of some specific expectations to clarify any misconceptions and/or myths that have been suggested by the media. Finally, the third portion of the workshop will be dedicated to exploring how teachers can introduce and navigate some of the topics covered in the Human Development and Sexual Health strand in our Grade 1 to 12 classrooms.
Providing additional insight, Justice Marvin Zuker will review some of the legal considerations and questions arising around Ontario’s new Sexual Health Education Curriculum. At the core of his discussion is his analysis of the key objectives of the curriculum; is the curriculum designed to require educators to ensure pupils are provided age-appropriate instruction in human growth and development OR is it intended to foster a partnership between parents and schools to promote the optimal health and well-being of pupils? This examination of the curriculum then naturally leads to additional questions regarding parental control over student participation and the topic emphasis of the new curriculum – what is included/what is left out/at what age are topics broached?
