Play-Based Learning in the Primary Classroom Kindergarten – Grade 3

December 1, 2014 from 9:00 am - 2:00 pm

$325

Agenda

Primary curricula are becoming increasingly academic in nature and teachers are being tasked with implementing these academic expectations using developmentally appropriate practices. The use of play-based learning offers possibilities in the face of this challenge.

Play exists on a continuum ranging from child-initiated free play to teacher directed playful learning. This workshop will explore both the theory and the practice of these differing pedagogical approaches to play-based learning discussing the benefits and challenges. Participants will be provided with practical strategies for enacting play-based learning in the classroom with a specific focus on the role of play in the learning of academic skills, the role of play in students’ social and emotional development, and the role of the teacher in play scenarios.

Speakers

Angela Pyle Pic (1)Angela Pyle is an Assistant Professor at Dr. Eric Jackman Institute of Child Study at OISE, University of Toronto.
