Supporting Students With Anxiety Issues: Practical Strategies for Teachers – Buffalo-Amherst

In this seminar, the presenter will explore the characteristics of the most commonly seen anxiety challenges as they manifest themselves at school. These learnings will then be paired with comprehensive considerations of classroom strategies, both individualized and class-wide, which can support students with anxiety, social, and self-regulatory challenges; embracing the concept of Universal Design – Good Practice For All, But Necessary For Some. Included amongst these interventions will be the use of emotional scales, social narratives, sensory breaks, contingency mapping, calming boxes, and much more.
Target audience: Elementary and High School Teachers
(Although all are invited to attend, this seminar has been developed for teachers rather than school social workers or school psychologists)
Donna Kester Phillips, Ph.D.
Donna Kester Phillips, Ph.D. has been an educator since the early 1970’s beginning in the elementary classroom. Experience as a reading specialist and classroom teacher eventually led her to the college level where she is currently an Associate Professor of Education at Niagara University. Her prior work as a trainer for a nationally recognized publisher helped her develop her skills as a workshop developer and presenter. She has worked extensively as an educational consultant and has published articles and presented at national conferences on literacy and literacy instruction. Dr. Kester Phillips has a strong interest in mindfulness and has integrated this practice into her teacher preparation classes. She has also established M.E. in School (Mindfulness Education in School), an organization with the purpose of assisting professionals in incorporating the practice of mindfulness into their own schools and professions. In addition, she is in the founder of Mindfulness Conversations, a summer conference at Niagara University for teachers, counselors, health and wellness professionals, and law enforcement and military personnel. Dr. Kester Phillips is currently doing research on mindfulness in a middle school, as well as studying its impact on reading success in a clinical remediation program.
